Sharon & John Steel

John is a broadcast engineer and will work on special projects to expand the ministry of the Harbour Light.  Sharon is a registered nurse and will provide personal support to the staff as well as assist in the ministry of the Harbour Light.  The Steels ministered at the Caribbean Radio Lighthouse (our sister station in Antigua) for three years and bring with them extensive radio experience.  They will also be ministering in Carriacou's local churches.

The Steels have known Rolen & Arlene Cornelius & family for many years and have helped the Harbour Light in various ways over the years.

Recent Prayer Letter...

February, 2008

Dear family and friends,

"But it is good for me to draw near to God:  I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works."  Ps 73:28

As we look back over the past year we can only stand in awe at what the Lord has done.

Just over a year ago we were accepted for service with ARMS (Aviation Radio Missionary Service) and Harbour Light of the Windwards in Carriacou.  It was a big step of faith to begin planning for a new place of service, but we have found that it has been a good place, for it has drawn us nearer to God.  We continued to work for Bob Jones University (for John full time, for Sharon part time, plus babysitting for grandchildren) and prepared a presentation and display for deputation.  Early on, God encouraged us by providing people who promised to pray and to support us financially.  Along the way the Lord repeatedly reminded us of His direction as special gifts were given to provide for specific needs we will encounter as we go.

In late September/early October we made a trip to the Northeast to share the ministry of the Harbour Light.  Again we saw the Lord go before us as we had opportunity to visit old friends and make new ones along the way.  What a wonderful bond there is among God's people wherever they are.  In one church we were especially encouraged as a woman met us at the door and said that she was so glad to see us again and that she had prayed for us over the past 15 years.  (We had met her while we were serving in Utah before coming to Bob Jones University.)

In late December/early January we made a whirlwind trip to Indiana to see Sharon's mom who is 87 and to the upper peninsula of Michigan to see her brother who had been critically ill after a ruptured appendix.  Again we are declaring God's marvelous works.

Just before Christmas we received additional support that put us at 100% of what the mission board has estimated for our needs.  (Sharon had quit working the end of November and John had planned to quit the end of December.)  Preparation to go to Carriacou kicked into high gear as we began packing boxes, sorting,  giving things away,  packing boxes,  trying to judge what we would need in Carriacou (where there isn't a WalMart for probably 500 miles) and (did we say?) packing boxes.

Our house is on the market to be sold, and we are trusting for God's timing in that.  We are awaiting visa papers from Carriacou before purchasing airline tickets, but we are hoping to leave this month!

Our daughter Ruth,  who has been living with us since she returned from helping  home school  missionary children in Dominica, has had some job interviews and is making plans for other housing once our house is sold.

We ask you to pray for us so that we might rejoice together in His answers:  1) That we would have a greater desire to know God and please Him; that He would prepare us for His place of ministry for us; that we would be sensitive to the working of His Spirit within us.   2) For the sale of our house.  3) For wisdom in completing the sorting and packing process.  4) For our visa papers.  5)  For the timely shipment of our belongings.  6)  For God to minister in the lives of our children and grandchildren as we leave Greenville.

In His Service,

John & Sharon
